I brought my tortoise Neeps to Florida with me this year and he is loving life! He has free roam of the house (once he has had a bath and done his business!) and it amazes me that he can find new places to hide every day. I rigged up a little house for him (along with proper lighting for warmth and keeping his shell healthy!) which he crawls into each night, like clockwork at 8 pm. I don’t see him again until around 8am.
I especially love seeing him poke his little head out of his house each morning and then walk towards me so I can rub and pat his shell ( they are very sensitive to touch and it is just like patting a dog or cat!). He eats a diet of kale, romaine lettuce and cucumbers, but his favorite food is strawberries. I put a whole strawberry in his dish (as an occasional treat) and he devours it quickly!
Probably the funniest thing is how our cat, Rusty, can often be found hanging out near Neeps. It is almost like he is watching his little brother. Occasionally Neeps gets a burst of energy and starts tearing around the house chasing Rusty!
We are heading back to Maine soon, and while Neeps has a large indoor pen in our house, I fear he will miss Florida life. He has become quite fond of the airiness of our linae, plus the strawberries down here are way better than at home!
