Diane and Amy are new rescue tortoise owners.  Each day brings a new discovery and a Google Search.  Tattie came to live with Amy after our late summer fundraiser, Beer for Turtles, at Lone Pine Brewery in Old Orchard, Maine.  Nate, a volunteer with the organization, brought several tortoises to the event and was an excellent ambassador for turtle and tortoise rescue.  So good, that Amy and Diane each took a tortoise home and the journey began.

The promise of a Northeast spring, longer days and warm sunshine streaming through the windows has awakened and warmed up Tattie’s reptile brain. She is very alert, hungry and enjoys her galavants in the sunny bedroom.  She is following her prehistoric DNA chasing the sunshine and basking.

The Northeast weather has been cold and wet, getting outside each day involves layers of clothing and extra effort to get the mud boots off without creating a huge mess. When the sun does pop out, it is fascinating to watch Tattie move in and out of the sunshine, she splays her legs out from under her shell to absorb as much sunshine as possible. Perhaps this behavior, eons old  is a lesson waiting to be learned. When the sun is shining and the warm breezes are coming in through the window, stick your head, neck and legs out to absorb all you can.

“For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone.; the flowers appear on the earth; the time of singing birds has come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land.”

-Song of Solomon 2:11-12
