Q&A About Neeps & Tattie

It is important to note that there is a very specific preparation method that must be followed before a tortoise can be hibernated in a fridge.  Tortoises are typically hibernated 2-3 months with that method.*

While a tortoise hibernates using the fridge method, it is important to check the tortoise each day, weigh it twice per week and check to be sure the temperature is between 1C and 10C. Just opening the fridge door provides enough fresh air. An average fridge contains enough oxygen to sustain a hibernating tortoise for 1-2 weeks.*
